Ivy for Everyone???

There are those who wish to subvert the trad.
They say things like "Trad is a derivative form blah, blah, blah."
They say things like "Trad didn't even exist until 2004 blah, blah, blah."
They say things like "Trad only exists on the internet blah, blah blah."
To these people I say: Pfuie!

These people I think are mostly British. They don't like the trad because it is so much bigger and better than their little ivy thing. And there are some major differences between Trad and Ivy. Trad is mostly worn by American men who wish to look nice but can't afford the really good clothes. And ivy is mostly worn by Brits who wish to annoy their relatives.

You mean you don't buy the Great Internet Construct Conspiracy Theory?

You mean the one where is was constructed by the same one who is now trying to tear it apart?

Anyway, forget all that. Your million dollars is in the mail!

Hello!

Just "Russell" from London here. You know me.

Great Blog.

Patrick's is also well worth checking out too for another insight into the "Trad" mind (Link above).

I really like the Japanese Ivy style photos LW - It links you closer to "Trad" in the word's true sense.

But that aside, I've no desire to tear "Trad" apart at all only to improve it. I've popularised it & promoted it, now I want to hone it into something with real merit...

If I can.

Well.... That's the plan anyway.

My best to you & your blog. -

Jim

Hello Jim and Russell,

Welcome to LST and I'm glad you are here. And thanks for the best wishes.

I don't envy you your task of trad improvement. I've come to believe that as long as trad is tethered to a message board, if will forever be slipping through ones fingers. There is simply no way to nail it down. To try is like pissing in the wind.

In order for trad to be shaped and molded, it will need to be moved away from the message boards where a higher power can set the tone. I suspect that this is what old chops is up to with his Trad Governing Body, something that sounds a little fascistic to me, but we will see. I just hope they don't try to make me wear a pocket square.

warmest,

lw

You sum it up very well.

"Trad" as proposed by 'Harris' looked to me (if not others I know) like a great chance to promote this neglected style of ours.
It was the perfect marketing/positioning for today - Drawing on Ralph Lauren & Preppy, and what's wrong with that? When a promotional strategy works, it works.

My evil plan isn't really all that evil.

We have a healthy "Trad" forum today, which is something. We didn't have a real discussion at all on whatever level on AAAC in August of '04.

Making "Trad" 'smarter' doesn't mean that it was worthless before - It's all a learning curve & we're all on it.
We all promote "Trad" in our own ways.

I just know some sicker tricks than most.

I'm scarred by a lifetime in media and advertising you know...

Pray for me? ;)

best -

J.

no need for "sicker tricks"-given that the egalitarian view of trad is being espoused.

Lets suppose a purely fictional blogger (or several) invented a background /sartorial heritage-I might well heed some good advice no matter what their exact provenance was- If it is entertaining or edifying ..
But sinister-no dice..I guess that aspect is lost on me.
kudos to longwing for humor and a fun blog
